About This Project

One of the most important measures of a successful historic preservation project is its long-term performance. The restoration work completed at Hummelstown Church demonstrates how traditional materials and proper preservation techniques can provide lasting protection for historic masonry.

Restoration Artisans began work at the church in 2008 under the direction of Ken Saul Jr., President and Lead Craftsmen. The initial phase focused on the historic bell tower and included structural masonry stabilization, installation of new copper gutter systems, in-kind replacement of deteriorated Hummelstown brownstone using reclaimed stone, and repointing with Saint-Asteir Natural Hydraulic Lime Mortar. All repairs were designed to be compatible with the original historic masonry while allowing the wall system to remain vapor permeable.

The successful completion of the bell tower restoration led to additional preservation phases throughout the remainder of the church façade. Between 2009 and 2024, Restoration Artisans completed extensive masonry repointing, brownstone repair, and selective stone replacement using historically appropriate materials and traditional preservation techniques.

In 2026, Restoration Artisans continues its long-term commitment to the church by conducting drone surveys of the bell tower restoration completed in 2009. These inspections allow our team to monitor the condition of the masonry, mortar joints, and previous repairs, ensuring that the restoration continues to perform as intended and that the structure remains safe and sound. This proactive approach reflects our philosophy that historic preservation does not end when construction is complete—it includes ongoing stewardship to help safeguard these irreplaceable landmarks for future generations.

The Hummelstown Church project reflects Restoration Artisans’ commitment to preserving historic buildings through the use of traditional European materials, scientifically compatible repair methods, and skilled craftsmanship. By combining proper restoration techniques with long-term monitoring, we help ensure that these historic structures continue to serve their communities for generations to come.
