Opening the past: A 163-year-old time capsule at Christ Episcopal Church

Founded in 1763, Christ Episcopal Church is the oldest English-speaking congregation in Reading. As preparations were underway for the church’s 200th anniversary celebration, our team began researching the building’s history. During that process, we discovered historic newspaper articles documenting that a time capsule had been placed within the church walls more than 160 years ago, the timing could not have been better. With the bicentennial celebration approaching, the church decided it was finally time to locate and open this remarkable piece of its history.

Using specialized wall-scanning equipment and a borescope, our team carefully pinpointed the exact location of the hidden time capsule within the historic masonry wall. Once its position was confirmed, our craftsmen meticulously opened the wall with the utmost care and precision, ensuring that both the surrounding historic fabric and the long-hidden contents were preserved. Every step was performed with the same respect and attention to detail that defines all of our historic preservation work, knowing that what lay behind the wall had remained unseen for 163 years.

As the capsule was carefully opened, we found an extraordinary collection of artifacts that had remained untouched since the 19th century. Inside were period coins, Bibles, prayer books, and historic parish documents, each offering a fascinating glimpse into the faith, daily life, and traditions of the congregation that built and worshipped in this remarkable church. Holding these items was like stepping back in time and connecting directly with those who carefully placed them inside the wall more than a century and a half ago.
